What is World of Warcraft: Forever? The new version of World of Warcraft will be launching on November 4, 2026. Yet, the game looks similar to World of Warcraft: Classic and has been referred to as Classic+. Understandably, people have been confused. I’ve been playing the WoW Forever beta. The game looks fantastic.
WoW fans have been asking for years for Blizzard Entertainment to bring back the good old days. These requests led to the company releasing the WoW Classic versions of the game. A slower and relaxing adventure which is different from the fast-paced nature of modern retail World of Warcraft. So, lets talk about the differences between World of Warcraft: Forever, World of Warcraft: Classic, and modern World of Warcraft. As there are now three distinct versions of the game, we’ll focus on World of Warcraft: Forever first.

What Is World Of Warcraft Forever
World of Warcraft: Forever was introduced during BlizzCon in September 2026, and is playable as long as you have an active subscription. Blizzard Entertainment rewound the clock to vanilla WoW. A time where traveling across Azeroth was a journey, and the journey was the game. Social interaction was crucial to quest. Every inch of Azeroth needed to be explored. WoW Forever is taking the original version of the game, adding new content, and improving on the original game’s flaws.
In World of Warcraft: Forever, there are new zones, over a 1,000 new quests, and new class and race combinations. These new class and race combinations include options like Undead Paladins and Dwarf Shamans. Forever also comes with a new race of blue-skinned elves called the Skyborne. Blizzard hinted at more new races and class combinations coming to Forever with a survey on the Battle.net launcher. New dungeons and raids are also being added with WoW Classic developer, Josh Greenfield, already teasing a mega dungeon.
Basically, WoW Forever is a fresh start for World of Warcraft. The game asks the question of what would’ve happened had the Dark Portal never opened and allowed us entry into Outland. Blizzard Entertainment is planning on expanding the original world, and branching into unfinished stories and characters in Azeroth.
The game is hosted on a mega server. Players will choose between four rule sets. The rule sets are Player vs. Environment (PvE), Player vs. Player (PvP), Role-playing (RP), and Hardcore. Fans first encountered hardcore mode in WoW Classics Season of Discovery. Dying in hardcore mode means having a permanent character death. Players can choose a different rule set to resurrect their character avatar.
Forever is giving Blizzard Entertainment and the fans a chance to begin anew. As the name implies, WoW Forever will be a version of World of Warcraft that we can rely on to stay true to the spirit of Warcraft. The level cap will stay at level 60. So, Blizzard Entertainment will introduce Horizontal Progression.
Instead of leveling to gain power and making old content obsolete, Blizzard is taking a similar approach as Old School Runescape, and are planning on adding new content all throughout the leveling experience. New dungeons, raids, and gear will remain relevant after a new patch drops. Forever is a fantastic chance for new players to jump into World of Warcraft, and for old players to rediscover Azeroth with fresh eyes.
What Is World Of Warcraft: Classic?
World of Warcraft: Classic is a recreation of the original vanilla WoW from 2004. In the Classic versions of the game, players can experience Azeroth before the Cataclysm. Over time, Classic has continued to move on and created many iterations of the game. As I previously mentioned for WoW Forever, Blizzard has introduced a hardcore mode where permanent character death is possible. To resurrect your character you have to choose a standard WoW Classic realm.
WoW Classic has also introduced Season of Discovery. During the Season of Discovery, players used a rune system to unlock gear, and play new classes like tank rogues and healer mages. Dungeons were converted into raids, and the game progressed through level caps. Season of Discovery is completed. The servers still operate, like Classic WoW, but without new content.
The WoW Classic Era servers also include the Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria Classic. So players have the option of choosing which version of Classic WoW they’d like to play. All versions are accessible with a current game subscription.
What Is Modern World Of Warcraft?
World of Warcraft: Midnight is the modern version of the game. The WoW fandom refers to the game as retail. But, the modern version of the game has received consistent updates since the original vanilla WoW. As a result, modern WoW includes quality of life improvements. Some of the improvements include flying and raid finder.
Over the years, the fandom has argued that the quality of life improvements have stripped away the special magic that made vanilla WoW what it was. Consequently, the modern game is unrecognizable compared to vanilla. Modern WoW focuses more on end game content like raiding. The social interaction within the game world suffered.
I admit that I left World of Warcraft years ago. The announcement of World of Warcraft: Forever brought me back. Blizzard presented Forever as a return to form. Forever is a fresh start. Modern WoW does have a place with players that prefer faster leveling, and quick travel. Hopefully, having three distinct versions of World of Warcraft will give all the fans what they need from the Warcraft intellectual property.

World Of Warcraft Shadowlands: Chains Of Domination
World of Warcraft BlizzConline news began with information about Shadowlands next content update. Patch 9.1 is called Chains of Domination. The trailer for Chains of Domination featured Bastion and the Archon.
We receive our first glimpse of Anduin free from the Maw. He visits the Archon to discuss something important. But, we soon realize that Anduin isn’t making this visit on his own. The Alliance king is under the Jailer’s control, and the Jailer has a score to settle with the Archon.
Chains of Domination will also feature a new zone. Discover the mysterious Korthia, the City of Secrets, which is a long-lost domain that has fallen within the Maw. The covenants strike back and launch an assault on the Jailer’s territory.
A new 10-boss raid called Sanctum of Domination awaits. Within the raid explore treacherous and unexplored regions of Torghast. Fight the Tarragrue, and face-off against the Banshee Queen herself in a fateful confrontation.
Also, a new 8-boss mega-dungeon called Tazavesh, the Veiled Market was announced. The dungeon is set in a bazaar of the mysterious Brokers and features a high-stakes heist to steal powerful artifacts from Azeroth.
Season 2 of PvP will start, and the covenants are receiving a new armor set any class can wear. Flying can also be unlocked within each of the four Covenants domains.

World Of Warcraft Classic: The Burning Crusade
World of Warcraft the Burning Crusade Classic will be released this year. Classic players can decide if they want to advance their characters to the Burning Crusade with the rest of their realms, or if they’d rather stay within the WoW Classic era and transfer to Classic only realms.
The Burning Crusade was World of Warcraft’s first expansion. Take a journey through the Dark Portal and visit the shattered world of Outland. Beware the Fel Reaver in Hellfire Pennisula as you quest through the chaotic region. New playable races include the Draenei (Alliance) and Blood Elves (Horde). Defeat Illidan Stormrage at the Black Temple and stop his reign of terror.
Flying is introduced in Outland. Arena PvP system allows you to enhance your gear with the new profession jewelcrafting. You can choose to align with the Aldor or the Scryers in Shattrath City. You can play both the Burning Crusade and Shadowlands on the same game subscription.

Take a wild adventure through pain and betrayal as we watch our favorite heroes face new challenges. An assassination attempt on Queen Talanji’s life sets the dark tone of suspicion and mystery. The Horde and Alliance have a new agreement of peace, but even King Anduin Wrynn is weary. He knows that he must use the Horde’s resources to help him find the Banshee Queen Sylvanas Windrunner, but even that isn’t enough to stop old suspicions. Update: Will Blizzard fix WoW Classic botting problem? Well, Blizzard updated fans on July 1st, about the WoW Classic botting issue. The company has done a ban wave, and have banned about 40,000 accounts since June 17th.
Will Blizzard fix WoW Classic botting problem? Botting is a form of cheating in video games. A bot is a computer that controls a playable character. Bots in WoW can have erratic movements, automatic whispers, and armor which don’t make sense. Generally, you can tell you’re looking at a bot because something about their behavior is off.
Botting is a serious problem in games like World of Warcraft Classic. Cheaters who use bots are able to mine nodes and run multiple dungeons in a day. Every server has an economy, and botters can infiltrate it by selling items on the Auction House that they obtained through dishonest means.
Yesterday, Blizzard said on the official forums, players are limited to 30 instances (dungeon and raid) runs a day in Classic. The restriction applies to all of your characters per realm. Instead of Blizzard banning the actual bots, they’ve decided to punish the regular player base instead. But, this may not be a real restriction as Blizzard made an April Fool’s Day joke about this a few years ago. Let’s examine the botting issue further, and discuss how Blizzard can fix it.

Will Blizzard Fix WoW Classic Botting Problem?
On June 17th, 2020, Twitch Streamer Asmongold decided to bust bots in retail WoW and WoW Classic. He and many players visited various dungeons and reported bots.
These bots were automatically teleported to the dungeons and running inside. Many of the bots were even wearing the exact same armor. You could tell that they were bots because there were hundreds of copies of the same character. Surprisingly, retail WoW had more bots than WoW Classic during Asmongold’s test.
Blizzard has mentioned before that banning individual bots is complicated. The company has said that preventing exploitative behavior is more effective than banning the bots. Usually, botters are banned in waves. Botters will often use stolen accounts to perform their illegal activities. Blizzard is asking WoW Classic players to get authenticators, and the company will give them four extra bag slots as a reward. Despite the fact, this goes against the #nochanges that most WoW Classic players have requested, an authenticator may protect more accounts and hopefully help to combat botting.

How Can Blizzard Fix Botting?
Blizzard should respond to player reports because oftentimes our reports are ignored. Bots are usually controlled by a computer program, so maybe Blizzard can find a way to ban the program? The company shouldn’t punish regular players. Most WoW Classic players are playing the game the right way. The integrity of the game is at stake here.
Most WoW Classic fans asked for a return to the past because they wanted WoW to be more rewarding. Grinding to level 60, gearing, and then participating in raids and battlegrounds is what players want. Botters cheapen the experience because there is no effort on their part. A computer is playing a game for them.
Botters mostly focus on collecting materials to sell, but some of them do interact with other players. If you, unfortunately, duel a bot, you’ll most likely lose, and then you’ll question what happened?
Final Thoughts

New WoW Classic Content February 12th. If you complete “Hands of the Enemy” and reach Revered with the Hydraxian Waterlords you may now obtain an Eternal Quintessence from Duke Hydraxis.
Also, the Darkmoon Faire is coming in early February. Players will begin seeing the faire set up on Friday, February, 7th, and the festivities will be available on Monday, February, 10th. Enemies and bosses will begin dropping Darkmoon Cards on Wednesday, February 5th.
A gathering of the exotic from around the world and beyond, Silas Darkmoon has brought together the Darkmoon Faire as a celebration of the wondrous and mysterious found in Azeroth. While the Faire spends most of their time in parts unknown, they do stop from time to time in Mulgore and Elwynn Forest. When the faire is on its way barkers will stop by Orgrimmar and Ironforge to announce its arrival.

The month of October also saw strong engagement, and it’s looking good for the next quarter. With all this positive Warcraft news it’s only natural to ask what’s coming next. This post will contain my opinion.
We may see The Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King return. During BlizzCon, Executive Producer of World of Warcraft John Hight said that Blizzard wasn’t opposed to the idea of creating a Burning Crusade server. Fans have expressed varied opinions on the topic. #NoChanges is a huge deal to many Classic fans.
The World of Warcraft fandom can’t agree on when WoW ‘died’. If you’ve played WoW since Vanilla then you’ve heard about WoW’s death and resurrection numerous times. So this is the reason why many fans don’t see eye to eye on how WoW Classic should continue.
So let’s examine the pros and cons of each option. What would happen if Blizzard decided to give us a Classic plus? Would we have an alternate timeline now? Or what if Blizzard gave us The Burning Crusade with no flight? We may need to discuss what caused the World of Warcraft to ‘die’ first. As a warning, this post will contain my opinion.

Would A WoW Classic Plus Be a Good Idea?
Well…Let’s Look At How World of Warcraft ‘Died’ First
Most World of Warcraft fans will agree that the first three expansions were WoW’s best. So the glory days of WoW lasted roughly six years. They included Vanilla, The Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King. Now not every fan is in unison with quality of life improvements that popped up in BC and Wrath. But, a whopping 12 million subscribers during Wrath paint a different picture.
Today, fans argue about flight, dungeon finder/looking for raid, welfare epics, time-gating, a lack of player vs. player interaction and more. One important thing to remember is that not all World of Warcraft players is the same. Not everyone revels in player vs. player combat, and not all players participate in raids. We also don’t all adore questing, and not everyone likes to explore Azeroth the same. Some players prefer discovering on the ground. They feel it’s immersive and they like PvP combat. Other players prefer flight. Staying on the ground can feel like being caged. Either way, the game is supposed to provide us with epic fantasy.
Sometimes the fandom doesn’t listen to each other. There are millions of us worldwide. It’s incredibly easy to forget that no play style is better than the other. So this makes it hugely difficult to pinpoint exactly what ‘killed’ the game. We can point fingers at flying, but the game was doing fine during BC and Wrath. The developers used flight as a gameplay mechanic. So Azeroth already felt massive, and they made it bigger by requiring us to use flight to access new areas.
How WoW ‘Died’ Continued
Flight isn’t the only issue fans sound off about. Another hot button topic is the Dungeon Finder and Looking for Raid tool. Now Blizzard implemented dungeon finder in Wrath to make finding groups faster. In the beginning, Dungeon Finder was more confined to your server. Now it’s connected to the whole game. There was still more accountability for players to be kinder to each other. So the early versions of the Looking for Group tools are different than what we’re dealing with today.
Back in the day, most of the fanbase wasn’t participating in end game content. Blizzard introduced looking for raid to fix that problem. Hardcore raiders don’t like this because they’d rather we all joined a raid team. Honestly, if someone doesn’t want to raid you don’t want them on your team. They won’t be dedicated and you’ll be frustrated. Not all players have personal time for a raid team, and many players can’t participate due to health concerns and other problems. I did raid a few expansions ago with an old guild, but I don’t raid now. So at the moment, I use LFR to experience end game content. LFR is both a blessing and a curse.
During Wrath, the game still had a friendly community. At the time I was a new player. Not only were my friends welcoming, but I remember making new friends often. The game world was thriving. A lot of Wrath is like Classic. WoW Classic players don’t want to hear that, but Wrath and Classic gameplay are similar, and the fandom was friendly and helpful in both.
World of Warcraft didn’t feel different until Cataclysm. When the old world was revamped the magic of Warcraft was lost. Cataclysm isn’t the only thing that ‘killed’ WoW, but it’s a major factor. The game never felt the same after that. Now, during Cata and Mists of Pandaria, we didn’t have time-gated stuff yet. So the game still had a little bit of that old school feeling. In general, the World of Warcraft felt freeing.
Is WoW ‘Dead’?
Besides just Cataclysm overhauling the old world, the game developers are taking away more Warcraft magic. For example, when Death Knights were first introduced in Wrath everyone had one. The excitement for a Death Knight was off the charts. They were a knight, and their lore was epic.
Playing a hero class meant you started at a higher level. It had nothing to do with having an unfair advantage over your peers. We can all make a Death Knight. The excitement of playing a Death Knight is because of the fantasy surrounding them. The same can be said for Demon Hunters.
Many fans have expressed delight about hero classes starting at low levels in Shadowlands. We’re forgetting that World of Warcraft is a fantasy. So playing a hero class is a part of that. All of our characters are considered heroes, but they had to earn that title. What makes hero classes unique is they’re already special due to the storyline. So this is another reminder of how everyone in the fandom doesn’t play the game the same.
Some WoW fans play for the lore. A hero class may be exactly what they’re looking for when advancing through the storyline. Other players don’t care about the plot and it doesn’t matter one way or the other what level Death Knights nor Demon Hunters start for them. But, it should matter for the players who want to engage in that heroic class fantasy.
So…How Exactly Did WoW ‘Die’ Again?
World of Warcraft died because Blizzard changed focus from what made the game fun. For the average player fun can mean different things. Most players want the game to work. We also want to play in an immersive world. The gameplay needs to be exciting and rewarding, and this includes PvP, raiding, questing, etc. WoW is an MMO so players want to make friends. We want the plotline to be epic and make sense, and we want to play the game our way.
We already know WoW is a huge moneymaker. Blizzard wants us playing the game, but they don’t want to spend money to make it happen. It’s not that we have less content, but we do get a lot of reused content. Like Mechagon looked like Kul Tiras and it wasn’t anything special in appearance, but the island was fun to play on.
We’re also getting short-changed. So instead of the developers coming up with innovative ways to use flight, or create new player vs. player experiences, we keep getting the same rehashed content. Allied raceshave replaced new races and classes. A new race would make a new expansion so exciting back in the day. Remember, we’re still spending $60 for the game, and an additional $15 a month for less content.
How Exactly WoW Died Continued
There’s nothing wrong with earning things worth having in a video game. The problem is that Blizzard is making us earn stuff (allied races) that we should have from buying the game. Flying didn’t become a major issue until Blizzard tried to remove it in Warlords of Draenor. There have always been fans who didn’t like flight, but the fandom wasn’t this divided until now. Fans who don’t like flight are not being fair about Pathfinder. To some players who enjoy flight, Pathfinder does feel like a punishment. It’s a huge slap in the face compared to how the game was once played. The player base wasn’t lazy in Wrath because they purchased flight. Old school WoW is harder and requires a larger time investment than modern WoW.
Blizzard should be using flight as a gameplay mechanic. We should have to use flight to access hidden areas on the map. There should be enemies who shoot us out of the air. We should have flying mounts that allow us to attack other players with missiles. World of Warcraft is a war game. Why can’t we pilot a fighter jet or a fighter gryphon? Sometimes I feel like Blizzard is thinking too narrow with the flight issue. Instead of spreading their wings and embracing the possibilities, Blizzard has turned flight into their number one enemy.
Now That We Know How WoW Died…Would A WoW Classic Plus Be A Good Idea?
There are definitely more factors that contributed to World of Warcraft’s decline that wasn’t mentioned in this post. The post touched on a couple of big ones everyone keeps talking about. A WoW Classic Plus would be like a reset. Basically it’s like a gigantic what if. How would World of Warcraft be different if the game had gone in another direction?
Do you really want the current World of Warcraft development team to touch Classic? The best modern expansion so far was Legion, but it’s nothing like Vanilla, and some fans didn’t like Legion. A WoW Classic Plus has endless potential, but it can go horribly wrong. At some point, Blizzard would need to add new zones and new races. How much overlap with the current game and Classic is okay? Do WoW Classic players want Draenei and Pandaren running around?
Honestly, Blizzard should leave Classic alone. The #NoChanges camp is probably right on this one. Players who missed the early days of WoW won’t be able to revisit again. Once you begin making changes then it’ll never be the same.
But…What About The Burning Crusade And Wrath Of the Lich King?
As a Wrath veteran, I’d love to relive the Wrath of the Lich King. If Blizzard can create separate servers for BC and Wrath then that might work better then upgrading the Classic servers. They can give us the option of transferring our Classic characters over. The biggest concern would be if the fandom can survive the strain. We already have a divide between WoW Classic and the current World of Warcraft fans.
Some fans do play both games, but there are others who are loyal to one. Adding a BC or Wrath server could cause more problems if the fandom breaks more. The risk could be worth it for Blizzard though. More fans are nostalgic for the glory days of WoW. When we get bored with the current content we can take a trip back to the past.
Should The Burning Crusade And Wrath Of The Lich King Be Added Without Quality Of Life Enhancements?
The WoW Classic approach should be used for future additions. WoW Classic fans wouldn’t have accepted any version of Vanilla that wasn’t authentic. The same holds true for WoW fans who love The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King or any other expansion in the game. It’s fair.
All WoW fans want to relive their favorite expansion. We all have things we don’t like about each expansion too. It’s not fair to let our dislike for an expansion ruin another player’s fun. So any new servers added in the future should have their quality of life enhancements. Not all current World of Warcraft fans feel the game has declined. I may not like Allied Races, but many fans don’t have an issue with them. So if Blizzard decides to roll out BC or Wrath then they should be in their original state.

Today, Blizzard Entertainment breaks silence on Blitzchung controversy to suspend the eSports player for a year. This is regarding the incident which occurred on Oct. 6 at the Hearthstone Grandmasters tournament. President of Blizzard Entertainment, J. Allen Brack, posted a statement on Blizzard’s official website. Blizzard is going to return Blitzchung’s prize winnings, and they will lower his suspension to six months instead of a year.
Bltizchung was suspended after winning the Hearthstone Grandmasters. During the post-game interview, the professional eSports player wore a mask and said: “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our time”. Blizzard also suspended the shoutcasters too.
Worldwide fans responded with anger. Blizzard had positioned themselves on the wrong side of the conflict by siding with China and denying Bltizchung his freedom of speech. The company also wasn’t remaining true to its core values. Which Brack addressed in his letter. Blizzard’s core values are Think Globally, Lead Responsibly, and Every Voice Matters.
At Blizzard, our vision is “to bring the world together through epic entertainment.” And we have core values that apply here: Think Globally; Lead Responsibly; and importantly, Every Voice Matters, encouraging everybody to share their point of view. The actions that we took over the weekend are causing people to question if we are still committed to these values. We absolutely are and I will explain.
Blizzard Breaks Silence On Blitzchung’s Controversial Ban
Brack’s letter also explained the role of the shoutcasters. Their job is to amplify the excitement for the game and to keep the audience focused on the game. Which explains why Blizzard suspended them.
The letter explains why eSports competitions exist. ESports competitions are for players around the world to come together and share their love for gaming. He emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of the eSports channels, and also reassured Blizzard fans that the companies connection to China had little to do with their decision.
Brack said:
The specific views expressed by blitzchung were NOT a factor in the decision we made. I want to be clear: our relationships in China had no influence on our decision.
According to Brack, their goal was to protect the integrity of the tournament. They didn’t want to risk alienating fans because of divisive political views. Blizzard listened to the fanbase and realized they acted too quickly. They reevaluated the decision and decided that Blitzchung ‘played fair’ during the tournament, which means he deserved his prize money.
Major Protests Planned For BlizzCon
Blizzard’s response may have come too late. A coalition of gaming activists is planning a protest for BlizzCon. The nonprofit activist’s group, Fight For Freedom, is organizing the protest from GamersForFreedom.com. The website is being used to keep track of companies that have pledged to not censor players. They’re calling for players to protest at BlizzCon on November 1st.
In a statement, Evan Greer, the deputy of Fight For Freedom expressed his thoughts.
“Blizzard, and other companies who are engaging in censorship on behalf of an authoritarian government, are not going to get away with it. They have no idea what kind of Internet shitstorm they’ve unleashed. We’re going to make an example out of them to make sure that all companies know that throwing human rights and free expression under the bus to make some extra money will not be tolerated.”
Dayton Young, who’s the Product Director of Fight for Freedom said:
“Gamers deserve to know which companies are willing to engage in censorship on behalf of authoritarian regimes and which companies will defend basic freedom of expression.

UPDATE:Blizzard has broken their silenceon the controversy. They’re returning Blitzchung’s winnings to him, and lowering his suspension to six months.
Fans boycott Blizzard Entertainment after the company suspended Hearthstone eSports gamer Chung Ng Wai aka “Blitzchung”, who’s a Hong Kong native after he spoke out in support of the Hong Kong protests. Blizzard Entertainment removed him from the tournament, took away his $10,000 prize money, and suspended him for a year. The incident occurred on Oct. 6 in Taiwan during the Asia-Pacific Hearthstone Grandmasters tournament. During the official Hearthstone Twitch stream of the event, Chung was interviewed by two eSports casters when he voiced his opinion. Blizzard not only suspended Chung, but they also terminated the two casters interviewing him. Chung wore a mask during the interview because Hong Kong has banned wearing masks in public.
Chung said, “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our time” during the Twitch stream. This is a slogan used in Hong Kong for the protest. What’s disturbing about Blizzard suspending him, is the fact that they’ve bowed to China’s censorship.
Why Hong Kong Residents Are Protesting?
Residents of Hong Kong are protesting because mainland China is trying to exert control over its democratic political system. The British handed over Hong Kong to Beijing in 1984. This happened under the Sino-British Joint Declaration. At that time China had promised to grant Hong Kong autonomy. Ever since then, the Chinese Communist Party has tried to exert its control of Hong Kong by trying to make things less free and less fair. They’ve also tried to take over Hong Kong’s politics.
The United States has treated Hong Kong as a separate entity from China since 1992. Under the 1992 Hong Kong Policy Act, the US treats Hong Kong differently in matters of trade. Now, China is exploiting the US’s trade deal with Hong Kong to get around the US export controls, customs duties, and sanctions. For America, it’s become an issue of National Security because the Chinese government is also conducting influence and espionage operations.
According to Blizzard, Chung violated their Terms of Service (ToS) by speaking out.
Engaging in any act that, in Blizzard’s sole discretion, brings you into public disrepute, offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages Blizzard image will result in removal from Grandmasters…
“Today I lost Hearthstone, it’s only a matter of four years,” he said. “But if Hong Kong lost, it’s a matter of a lifetime.”
Boycott Blizzard- Why You Should Care?
Fans have shown their support for Chung and the Hong Kong protests by canceling their game subscriptions. We should care because freedom and democracy are being threatened. As an American, it breaks my heart to see Blizzard giving in to China’s censorship. Blizzard has core values that they ‘claim’ to represent. A few Blizzard employees covered them up yesterday.

Blizzard is connected to a Chinese gaming company called Tencent. Tencent is the world’s largest gaming company. It’s on the scale with Facebook and Google in terms of internet and Entertainment. Tencent is considered one of the world’s largest social media companies. Their many services include social networks, web portals, music, internet services, mobile games, payment systems, e-commerce, smartphones, and multiplayer online games. Now Tencent only owns a 5% stake in Activision Blizzard which means they technically have no power of company decisions, but Tencent is the major entertainment source in China. Tencent hosted Call of Duty Online. In 2012, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick announced the strategic partnership with the company.
“We are very excited about our relationship with Tencent and the opportunities of gaming in China. We think China is one of the most exciting places in the world for us to grow our business and to develop innovative new games.”
Companies Besides Blizzard Who’ve Come Under Fire
Large corporations like Blizzard, the National Basketball Association (NBA), and Tiffany and Co. have sold out to China. The NBA was also in the news this past weekend, because a fan Sam Wachs and his wife, showed up to a Well’s Fargo Center in Philidelphia with masks and signs. They held up the sign which read “Free Hong Kong”. Security rushed over to them, and let them know they couldn’t voice political opinions at the game. The game was between the Guangzhou Loong Lions and the Philidelphia 76ers. Guangzhou Loong Lions is a Chinese team.
“They told me ‘no politics. I asked why and they told me not to give them a hard time. A little after the signs were taken away, I stood in my seat and chanted “Fee Hong Kong” until security escorted us out.”
Tiffany and Co. incited controversy when they posted an advertisement that appeared to support Hong Kong protestors. The jewelry company has since removed the post. Chinese model Sun Feifei was featured in the Ad. She wore a Tiffany ring and covered her right eye with her hand. Hong Kong protestors began covering one eye after two women suffered eye injuries from dealing with the police. Tiffany and Co. are claiming the Ad wasn’t political, and that the Ad was actually photographed months ago. Supporters of China posted on Weibo, which is China’s equivalent of Twitter, to let Tiffany and Co. know that they felt the timing of the advertisement was inconsiderate.

Blizzard Boycott – What Should The Fans Do?
Blizzard, the NBA, and Tiffany and Co. are on the wrong side of history. I understand it’s all about money, and from a business perspective, this makes companies beholden to the countries in which they do business. What they need to remember is that people come first. There’s no amount of money which makes it okay to suppress freedom. The boycott Blizzard was brought on themselves.
A famous saying states that money is the root of all evil. Big business has sold their souls to make more millions, but they’re forgetting about the consumers who make their business what it is. As consumers, we have to take a stand and decide what’s most important to us. No video game is worth innocent lives being lost, or their freedoms being denied. Companies need to find other ways to make money than relying on the Chinese market.

On the website, you can pledge support for two important bills making their way through Congress. The Hong Kong Policy Reevaluation Act of 2019, and the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act are some of the best ways to take action. Our lawmakers hold the power to try and make a change. The Hong Kong Policy Reevaluation Act of 2019 will make hold China accountable for trying to circumvent US law. With the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, this will require the US to identify people who’ve been abducted by the Chinese government. Another way you can help is by sending a message to major corporations who’ve sided with China. Money talks, and if businesses are worried about losing it, then they may take action. Boycott Blizzard and let American companies know that we’re not going to stand by and watch innocent people suffer. Rest assured that companies will listen if they’re afraid of losing money. Don’t stay silent because you’re afraid of backlash. We live in America and should exercise our freedom of speech. Be sure residents of Hong Kong know that we stand with them. In the future, maybe more companies will wake up and not make the same mistakes. They must remember that people always come first not millions.
