How to Play a Hunter in WoW: Forever. If you’re new to World of Warcraft, you may have been thinking about trying WoW: Forever. The newest version of WoW launched Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The launch was smooth and was one of the best launches I’ve experienced. Most new-player guides tell you to play a Hunter first because they have high survivability and versatility. The problem is that Hunters may be easy to play, but they’re hard to master.
So it’s no surprise that many Hunters received a bad reputation back in the day. Other players called them Huntards and kicked them from dungeon groups. Nothing’s more terrifying than running a dungeon for the first time and having the other group members start teasing you. Well, I’ve been playing a Hunter as my main in World of Warcraft for 18 years. I’m not perfect, and I haven’t been on a raid team in years, but I have enough experience to help you get started. So, I’m going to share some tips to help you feel confident playing solo and in groups. So, let’s dive into the Hunter class.

How To Play A Hunter In WoW: Forever
Hunter Basics 101

Hunters are versatile and lethal. They can do outrageous damage per second (DPS) in raids and learn how to kite (a technique that keeps an enemy at bay while you shoot them) enemies in the open world. A well-played Hunter can help with crowd control in dungeons, take down mobs solo while questing, and decimate opponents in player vs. player (PvP) combat. Hunters are a truly powerful class to fear. But it’ll take some time to master their skills. You first have to learn what to pay attention to. Don’t feel pressured to become a Hunter expert overnight. Over time, you’ll learn to master the class.
Bags And Ammunition

When you first enter Azeroth as a Hunter, you’ll notice two bags at the bottom right of your screen. The large bag is your storage, while the smaller bag is your ammunition. This means Hunters have one fewer bag slot than other classes.
You’ll soon learn that bag space is a hot commodity in Azeroth. So if you don’t choose Tailoring or Leatherworking as one of your professions, hopefully you can purchase bags or ask another player to craft them for you.
To help you track your ammo, you can see the number on the ammo bag, which shows how much is left. Hunters buy their ammo from vendors that sell General Goods. As you level, you’ll be able to buy and use ammo that does more damage. Some ammo bags also have a few more slots.

Armor And Stats

Hunters wear leather, then at level 40 they learn to wear mail. This allows Hunters to take more hits in combat. Plate-wearing classes like Warriors and Paladins can tank because they can handle the most damage. Hunters can rely on their Pet to tank for them when they’re playing solo. So Hunters are perfect for solo play.
Your most important stats include weapon damage, agility, hit chance, critical strike chance, haste, and versatility. Don’t roll need on every leather or mail item drop in dungeons and raids just because you can wear it. Hunters need speed, which is why agility and haste matter. Save intellect-boosting armor for Shamans and Druids, who need it most. You’ll do more damage per second if you pay attention to your stats when choosing armor.
Hunter Specializations

Hunters can choose between Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, or Survival. In WoW Forever, you can choose to save two specializations. If you’re mostly questing and playing with friends every so often, you can tweak your talent points to build the perfect setup.
Now, in modern WoW, if you’re going to join a raid team, you should always look up the perfect talent build. WoW Forever prioritizes the journey to level 60, so don’t stress about your talent points. If you decide to raid at level 60, then you can focus on having the perfect talent build.
Beast Mastery Hunters rely on their Pet to boost their damage. Some Hunter pets have special stats and appearances. The coolest-looking pets are rare. If you set your sights on a rare, be warned that it can take weeks or months to catch a rare spawn.
Marksmanship Hunters excel at shooting. These Hunters have pets too, but most of your damage will come from your character, rather than being split with your Pet.
Survival Hunters have a more hands-on playstyle. They can fight at melee range and utilize traps. If you’re looking for a unique way to play a Hunter, then Survival might be fun to try.

Hunter Pets

You can tame your first Pet at level 10. Your Pet makes life easier as a Hunter. Pets can tank mobs, keeping enemies off you and letting you shoot from a distance. But your Pet can also be a nightmare if you’re not careful in dungeon groups.
Pets have a pet bar that lets you control them. When you’re questing in the game world, it’s fine to keep your Pet on assist or defensive. Normally, I use assist while I’m questing. In dungeons, keep your Pet on passive, and be sure to turn off Growl. You don’t want your Pet to accidentally aggro (gain the attention of bosses or mobs) when you send them to attack.
Another tip: dismiss your Pet before jumping down to another pathway in dungeons. You and your party can skip walkways and avoid mobs, but Hunter pets are programmed to run through the corridor. So always dismiss your Pet, then jump. Once you’re safely on the next level, summon your pet again.
Hunter pets have three specializations. These are Ferocity, Tenacity, and Cunning. Different pets suit different encounters. Tenacity pets are great for tanking. For example, a bear or a turtle is a tenacity pet. Cunning pets are fantastic for PvP, as they can help you outsmart your opponent. An example would be a bird. Ferocity pets are damage dealers. They’re great to use when in dungeon and raid groups. An example would be a lion.
Taming pets can be tricky. If the beast interrupts or kills you, then the tame will fail. Sometimes it’s a good idea to shoot Concussive Shot and have an ice trap in front of you; this way, you can tame the beast while it’s locked in ice. Hopefully another player won’t kill your target while you’re taming it. Be sure to stable your current pet before trying to tame another beast.
Always remember to feed your Pet. Unhappy pets deal less damage and may run away. Mend Pet heals it, and Revive Pet resurrects it if it dies.
Hunter pets have their own talent points and levels. When you tame a new pet, kill mobs so your Pet can level and get stronger. If your Pet isn’t holding aggro (threat), you might need to teach them Growl (taunt). Every encounter will be different, but ideally you want to place Hunter’s Mark on your target. Then send in your Pet. Once your Pet has aggro, you can hit the target with your damage-over-time abilities like Serpent Sting, then continue the rest of your rotation.
Check out an example of a Hunter macro that makes it simpler to use your opening abilities; you can check Wowhead to learn how to create macros:
WoWF Pull button (Hunter’s Mark + Auto Shot + pet)
#showtooltip Hunter’s Mark
/cleartarget [dead]
/targetenemy [noharm]
/cast !Auto Shot
/petattack
/cast Hunter’s Mark
You can also utilize Hunter pet add-ons to help you track them down. Add-ons are available on CurseForge. Some add-ons, like Feed Pet: Forever, can help you feed your pet. Another helpful tip is to use macros to auto-target certain rare pets. Add-ons and macros can be confusing at first, but once you get the hang of them, you’ll see they can make things easier.

Hunter Attacks And Abilities

As you level your Hunter, visit your class trainer and pet trainer to learn new abilities. Being broke is a hurdle, but it’s not the end of the world. Usually it’s a good idea to prioritize certain abilities. Different players may have preferences unique to their tastes. But as a beginner, it would help to have these abilities.
You’ll want to learn Serpent Sting to keep a damage-over-time buff on your targets. Hunter’s Mark keeps your target visible even while they’re stealthed, and also lets you deal more damage with ranged attacks. Arcane Shot is a powerful magical shot that does a lot of damage. You’ll also want to learn Track Beasts and Aspect of the Monkey to help you dodge attacks, or Aspect of the Hawk to increase your ranged attack power.
Once you start earning talent points, you can further customize your abilities. If you want to rely more on traps, learn Icy Trap to freeze an enemy in place. Hunters can also Feign Death to exit combat. Be careful about Feign Death in group content. If the tank dies on a mob and you Feign Death, the healer will get chewed up. Be mindful of other players around you when using Feign Death. Sometimes mobs will go after the next available target.
