World of Warcraft racism is difficult to discuss because there’s no policy for racism. The problem isn’t whether the racist behavior exists, but it’s the fact that no one wants to talk about it. Racism causes tension. Discrimination causes pain. Anyone who is a member of a marginalized group has experienced racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.
Racism and discrimination affect everyone. No one is a winner when people hurt others. In recent years violence against Asian Americans, and the deaths of unarmed African Americans have increased. So, the problem is larger than the World of Warcraft community. This post will discuss how racism impacts the WoW community. Recently, there were allegations of racism within top-end raiding guilds. Racism within WoW is widespread.
Trade chat is a cesspool of racist and sexists trolls. Pick-up groups (PuGs) are bad too because the bullies know they’ll never see you again. A computer screen gives people the courage to say what they’re already thinking. There should be a policy for racism in World of Warcraft.
So, how can we address the racial or discriminatory actions within the game? Let’s talk about it.

World Of Warcraft Racism And Discrimination
Guilds And Community
Choosing the right guild is important for every World of Warcraft player. Previously I’ve spoken about bad guild behavior within the game.
Some guilds can be toxic and create cliques. These problems are something every WoW player must watch out for. For the purposes of this article, we’ll be discussing choosing a guild for marginalized groups. We can’t force a policy for racism in World of Warcraft, but it can get the conversation moving.
As research for this article, I looked for guilds that are for people of color only. My search took me to Facebook, Reddit, and the World of Warcraft forums. I posted on these social media channelsasking my questions. What I discovered didn’t surprise me.
Finding a guild that is specifically for people of color is difficult. There isn’t a specific policy for racism in World of Warcraft. Minorities are a small percentage of the game. World of Warcraft isn’t advertised for people of color. So it’s not surprising when respondents to my questions were overwhelmingly white. I received the most responses on Facebook groups. Several of the conversations became heated.
Several toxic people accused me of being racist. They didn’t care that I’d experienced extensive racism within the game for years. Most of the respondents were kind and supportive. They offered me a chance to join their guilds. These guilds were welcoming and open.

Guilds And Community Continued
When looking for a guild make sure that they state what they believe. A guild that is open to diversity and kindness will have a policy for racism in World of Warcraft. They’ll also have a no-tolerance policy for hate speech. Your best bet will be joining a guild like these.
Besides being open to diversity and tolerance you’ll also want to pay attention to whether the guild participates in the activities you enjoy like raiding, mythic plus, or rated PvP. You could always start your own guild. Running a guild is work, but is rewarding with the right group of people.
Many Worlds of Warcraft players don’t notice the racism because it’s not affecting them. There are guilds that promote hate. So I can’t stress enough how important it is to pay attention to the guild description. Guilds that aren’t accepting of minorities, LGBTQ+, or other minority groups will show it. Your experiences within the game are valid. Don’t allow another player to tell you how to feel or respond to hate.
What’s interesting is that racism is so widespread within the community that I feel as if I’m invisible. Players have gone on racist tirades in Group, General, and Trade Chat.
Lately, these tirades bounce between blacks being lazy and the China virus. I’ve also noticed hateful speech toward immigrants. I’m astounded that hateful members of the World of Warcraft community feel comfortable enough to say these evil things. I know that people of color don’t make up a large part of the community, but it’s ignorant to assume that none of us play this game.
My Experiences Continued
Whenever a person of color wants to discuss race within WoW we’re labeled as racist. They tell us not to get political because they play the game to get away from all that crap. We’re supposed to shut our mouths and don’t start any drama.
Every Facebook group where I posted my question had several members accuse me of being the racist one. It’s appalling that a person of color discussing their own experiences with race in World of Warcraft is considered political and ruining their fun. Why is it that a racist individual’s freedom of speech is protected, but the people they’re hurting with that free speech are silenced?
People of color want to “get away from all that crap” too when we play WoW. It’s impossible for us to escape racism because it’s rooted in every aspect of our society. I wish more people of color played World of Warcraft, but how can they if they don’t feel welcome? World of Warcraft should be for everyone to play. Not only do we need more people of color to join the community, but they need safe spaces. It’s exhausting to see racist comments every time I log into the game. Throughout the years it’s only gotten worse.
A common shared experience regarding the World of Warcraft racism is silence. Many African-American’s don’t admit they play World of Warcraft.
I didn’t realize how blessed I was during Wrath. My godmother introduced me to WoW. Her guild was small and felt like a family. Half of the guild members were black because she had recruited her family, her boyfriend, and me. The racism within World of Warcraft didn’t affect me as much until I left her guild and attempted to start my own.
Added to the experiences of racism is sexism. As a woman, I’ve personally experienced men stalking me within the game. It’s led to me not revealing my race or gender, and I’ll stay silent in Discord too. These experiences are shared by many people of color and women. We shouldn’t have to feel ashamed for playing a video game.
We all have our own reasons for playing WoW. Azeroth is a spectacular world. The story is engaging, and the gameplay is fun. World of Warcraft provides endless entertainment. African-Americans make up about 13 percent of the United States population. This translates into roughly 40 million people. A lot of black people are into video games, anime, books, etc. We consume nerd culture, but sometimes feel ashamed to admit it.
World of Warcraft racism and discrimination won’t disappear until we make people accountable. A policy for racism in World of Warcraft could help.
The community has to be willing to stand up for the little guy. As people of color, our voices are drowned out. When I remain silent, nothing changes, but if I speak up then I’m labeled racist and political. Racism within World of Warcraft ends now.
Several people attacked me on the Facebook groups by saying race doesn’t matter in WoW. They also joked about blue and red being the only colors that matter. I agree that Azeroth is a fictional world and real-world racism has no place within the game. The problem is that everyone is comfortable ignoring the obvious racial slurs and comments which have infested the game world.
How Do We Fix It? – Blizzard Entertainment
Blizzard Entertainment can also take steps to discipline and punish offenders. The company has made positive strides by including more diverse options for character customization within the game, but many racist players are now playing black characters. So it’s a win-win and a lose-lose situation.
World of Warcraft would benefit from having a more diverse community. I’m glad that Blizzard Entertainment has a diverse staff, but we must see that within the game.
Heroes in WoW don’t look like me. The exception would be Wrathion, but he’s not exactly black, and he’s not human. We need diversity in our hero lineup, and we need the game to be marketed to people of color. Let people of color know that WoW is a fun and engaging world. They should know that they’ll be safe in Azeroth.
Racism is a moral problem, not a political one. Until we can acknowledge that racism is a human issue, and the pain it causes, we’ll never be free.

World of Warcraft the Burning Crusade Classic beta has begun. A visit to the past is always welcome. If you’ve never played the Burning Crusade then you might not know what to expect. The Burning Crusade was World of Warcraft’s first expansion. Classic versions of WoW feel different.
Classic WoW is a good representation of what vanilla WoW was like. The Burning CrusadeClassic follows the same model as Classic WoW. Patience is key to playing old-school versions of World of Warcraft. Everything will feel different to you if you’ve never played Vanilla, the Burning Crusade, or the Wrath of the Lich King.

World Of Warcraft The Burning Crusade Classic Beta
What To Expect: Mindset
Mindset is crucial when playing the Burning Crusade. Leveling is slow. There is no dungeon finder or looking for the raid. Cross realm and sharding don’t exist in the Burning Crusade.
When I play older versions of WoW I always go in with the mindset of relaxation. There’s no pressure to min-max or learn systems. The end game is fun, but it’s not the point of the game. Leveling and existing within the game world is the experience. Exploration is encouraged, especially because you’ll have to read quests to discover new places to travel.
Modern World of Warcraft is all about the end game. When you play Vanilla, BC or Wrath always remember the journey is most important. You’re going to need professions and help from guildies. Gold is harder to make, but everything is incredibly expensive. Playing the Classic versions of World of Warcraft is fun. Articles about Classic WoW should still be helpful to get you started with the Burning Crusade Classic.
The first thing you’ll want to do is choose a realm. If you’ve never played World of Warcraft or any mass-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) before then you’re probably not familiar with realms. A realm is a server you play the game on.
All of World of Warcraft’s content and data is packed inside of a server blade and rests within a tower. So if you live in North America then you’ll want to join a North American server.
You want to pick a server in your region because of time zones. Playing WoW is no fun when everyone is asleep. Also, if you’re going to play with friends always ask them what server (and faction) they’re on before you create your character. A server has a name. Usually, a server in World of Warcraft is named after a lore character or place.

2. Declare A Faction
World of Warcraft the Burning Crusade Classic has two factions. The factions are the Horde and Alliance. Swearing allegiance to your faction is determined by several factors.
First, join the same faction as your friends. This way you can play together. Being in the same server and faction means you can be in a guild with them. You may also be interested in the storyline for each faction.
Horde races include the Orcs, Trolls, Undead (Forsaken), Tauren, and Blood Elves. The Horde races have banded together for survival. Orcs and Undead are usually considered evil or misunderstood by Alliance races. Undead were once humans. Their kingdom, Lordaeron, fell when the Undead Scourge (led by their own Prince Arthas who later becomes the Lich King) spread the plague of undeath.
Tauren loves nature and worships the Earth Mother (also known as Elune). The Blood Elves were once in the Alliance, but they were abandoned by them when the scourge tore apart their kingdom. They were referred to as High Elves then. Choosing a Horde race could help you better understand them.
Alliance races are Humans, Night Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, and Draenei. The Alliance races have banded together because of shared beliefs.
Most of the Alliance races have a strong faith within the light. Humans are like traditional medieval fantasy with castles and kings. The Dwarves live in a cold mountain and are great at finding treasure.
Night elves are from Kalimdor. They believe in protecting nature and worship the moon goddess Elune (she’s also the Earth Mother to the Tauren). Gnomes live with the dwarves because their capital was destroyed. They’re really cute, have squeaky voices, and are great at engineering.
Your final reason for declaring a faction is Player vs. player combat. Every race has a racial talent. Some races are known for having abilities that grant them an edge in PvP. Be sure to consider racials when choosing them. Different races may also give certain professions a boost. For example, Draenei is good at jewelcrafting, and gnomes are good at engineering. Blood Elves and Draenei were new races that were added to the game during the Burning Crusade.

3. Pick Your Class
There are nine classes in the Burning Crusade Classic. The classes are Hunter, Warrior, Druid, Mage, Shaman, Priest, Rogue, Warlock, and Paladin. Shamans and Paladins were new classes added to the Burning Crusade.
Classes are divided into roles for group content. There are three roles called a tank, DPS (damage per second), and healer. You’ll want to choose a class based on its role.
Tanks protect their group members from harm. Their job is to pull aggro (threat) of hard enemies. Without a tank, you can’t run dungeons or raids. Damage per second (DPS) are classes whose primary focus is damage. The DPS job is to burn (kill) the boss as quickly as possible. A healer’s task is to keep the party alive. Healers are crucial. In damage heavy fights you’ll be glad that you have a healer.
Tanking classes include Warrior, Druid, and Paladin. All classes can participate as DPS in a dungeon or raid. The healing classes include Druid, Shaman, Paladin, and Priest. Healers use mana (magic) to heal. Learning how to manage your mana is important for damage heavy fights.
In player vs. player combat, you’ll want to consider if you want to heal. Some classes like Rogues or Hunters are great at scouting. Rogues are assassins and can stealth around their enemies. Always remember to visit your class trainer to learn new abilities.
Professions are needed in the Burning Crusade Classic. You’re going to need a profession to make gold. Also, professions allow you to create armor, potions, and weapons. You’ll want to pick up professions before you start questing. Professions trainers are in major cities and small towns.
Joining a guild will be important because it’ll be difficult to level all the professions on your own. Guild members usually help each other. They’ll craft items for their guildies and raid team members.
The professions are divided into two categories. They’re called primary and secondary. You can only have two primary professions, but you are allowed to learn all secondary professions. Primary professions are divided into crafting and gathering. Ideally, you want to choose one gathering and one crafting profession. Many players will pick all gathering professions to make gold on the auction house.
Some races give professions a boost. You may also want to consider if your class can use anything that you make. For example, a blacksmith can create guns, and an herbalist can create potions to regain mana or health. Secondary professions like cooking and first-aid can help you heal, and give you buffs that make your character stronger.
When you first log into the Burning Crusade Classic you’ll see a quest giver. A quest giver has a yellow exclamation mark floating above them. Quests aren’t marked on the map. They’re also not tracked.
Open your quest log by pressing “L” or clicking the trophy icon on the bottom of your screen. To track a quest, hover over the quest title, and hold down “shift+right click”. If the quest has any trackable objectives (ex. killing five boars) then it will appear on the right side of your screen.
To find a quest location be sure to pay attention to the wording. Quests will use wording like “east of the camp” or “south of the lake”. Always pay close attention to any identifiers in the quest text. These may include “east of the caravan on the Path of Glory” for example. Context clues will help you find your way.
In order to level you need to complete quests and turn them into the quest giver. This will award your playable character with experience points. Always remember to log out in an inn or major city. Doing so will give you a rested experience, and place your experience bar in the blue. This allows your character to level faster. Joining dungeon groups will also help because you’ll gain more experience in them. Be sure you have time to participate in a dungeon because there’s no dungeon finder and it may take time to find a replacement.
If you can’t find a quest location, or if a quest objective is too challenging then ask for help. Most Classic WoW players will lend a hand. You can also check websites like Wowheador Reddit for advice.
Be sure to join a guild. A guild is like an online club. So you can think of them as a virtual hangout spot. Guilds carve out a small pocket within the WoW community. This gives you a safe space to ask questions. Most guilds will recruit in Trade chat or General chat. Friendly players will invite you to their guild if they enjoyed playing with you.
Always pay attention to a guild’s description, especially if the guild has a website. You need to know what you’re looking for. Guilds participate in end-game content like raiding. Most guilds don’t allow hate speech. If you’re not sure about a guild you can always speak with a guild officer or the guild master. Don’t stay in a guild that makes you uncomfortable. To leave a guild, open the chatbox and type”/gquit” then press “enter”.
Guilds provide necessary resources. Leveling professions take a lot of materials. So guildies help each other to craft. It’s a good idea to say thank you and to offer something in return for the help. Many friendly players won’t desire anything, but gold, crafting materials, and useful items are always nice.
Lastly, have fun! I hope this post gets you started. You can learn how to raid and PvP later. I’ve been on a raid team in the past, and I used to run a guild. I’m not experienced in PvP because I don’t usually participate in it. If you want to learn to master your class, make sure to connect with other players who know how to play that class well. Good luck!

Blizzard Entertainment announced The Burning Crusade Classic during BlizzConline. Some WoW Classic fans are hoping to see some quality of life improvements, while others want #nochanges. This fandom split is a reminder of the WoW Classic community’s previous conversation about having a WoW Classic Plus and if it’d be a good idea.
World of Warcraft has never been free-to-play. Yet, many unfamiliar with WoW often ask can you play WoW for free? If WoW was free to play there’s a possibility that the game’s quality would be impacted, but it’s a fun idea to discuss.

Is Arthas redeemable in World of Warcraft Shadowlands? Arthas is one of the most infamous characters in World of Warcraft. He was the Prince of Lordaeron. The human kingdom of Lordaeron used to lead the Alliance. During the third war, the kingdom came under siege by the undead scourge.
Prince Arthas Menethil made it his mission to discover who had released the plague of undeath in his kingdom. His strong will and his untimely fall into darkness are legends within Azeroth.
Despite Arthas’s skill as a Paladin and his devotion to his people, he always had an aura of arrogance. As Uther the Lightbringer’s best student, Arthas showed a measure of skill and promise hardly seen. But, Arthas’s hot temperament and stubbornness were hurdles that the young prince wasn’t able to overcome. Those negative traits within Arthas are what the dreadlord Mal’Ganis cultivated.
Arthas took up the cursed blade Frostmourne and became a Death Knight. His misguided beliefs that the blade would help him save his kingdom pushed him into ruin. Eventually, Arthas merged with the Lich King and became one of Azeroth’s most-fearsome villains. Now that we’ve crossed the veil into the Shadowlands (Realm of Death) we might run into Arthas.
Is redemption possible for the fallen prince?

Is Arthas Redeemable In World Of Warcraft Shadowlands?
Arthas Descent Into Darkness
To determine if Arthas is redeemable in World of Warcraft Shadowlands we need to examine his fall. Strong morals and arrogance guided him.
Plagued grain turned citizens into the undead. Stratholme was Lordaeron’s second-largest city besides the capital. So losing the city to the Scourge was a blow.
The Culling of Stratholme is more than just a popular dungeon in Wrath of the Lich King. During this event which occurred during the third war, Arthas realizes that the plagued grain had already reached the city. Stratholme was an important city in the kingdom and had a massive population.
Arthas made the difficult decision to murder every citizen before the plagued grain could turn them undead. His goal was to contain the outbreak to protect the rest of the kingdom. Uther and Jaina refused to help Arthas kill his own people. In anger, Arthas disbanded the Order of the Silver Hand which suspended the Paladins from service.
Is Arthas redeemable in World of Warcraft Shadowlands? Purging Stratholme was one of his darkest acts before he became a Death Knight. The Culling of Stratholme is a complicated topic. Some argue that Arthas choose to protect the many over the few. He had to act quickly.
Other arguments disagree. Arthas’s behavior was cruel and rash. The young prince could’ve chosen a humane way to deal with the crisis. Citizens of Stratholme were horrified when Arthas entered the city and slaughtered them. Many of them asked, “Why?” as they fell to their deaths.
The Culling of Stratholme plays a key role. At that moment, Arthas had chosen to sacrifice the few for the greater good. As a Paladin and a prince, it’s terrifying to imagine him going against the teachings of the light. The prince had always shone signs of liking power and even named his horse Invincible.
Yet, no one had imagined Arthas would stoop so low. Once you make a choice to slaughter your own subjects there’s no coming back. Murder is one of the darkest acts. Arthas decided to kill the citizens instead of allowing the plagued grain to turn them undead. Honestly, Arthas should’ve realized he played right into the Scourge’s hands. He caused darkness to descend on Lordaeron, and once he was consumed by its lustful pull there was no coming back.
Is Arthas Redeemable In World Of Warcraft Shadowlands?
The Expedition To Northrend
Arthas chased the dreadlord Mal’Ganis to Northrend. The icy continent is where the Lich King resided. Mal’Ganis knew that Arthas would be drawn to Frostmourne. A cursed Mournblade has the power to harvest souls.
When Arthas reached Northrend he discovered that Muradin Bronzebeard was searching for the blade. Arthas joined him in the hunt, but he received a message from his father King Terenas, and Uther to return home.
The prince then hired mercenaries to burn his soldiers’ ships. Arthas informed his soldiers that the mercenaries had betrayed them. His lie caused his men to kill the mercenaries.
Frostmourne was hidden in a cave. Muradin was struck by a shard of ice when Arthas attempted to move the runeblade. Arthas did attempt to heal Muradin with the light, but the call of Frostmourne was too strong and he turned to the sword instead.
The cursed sword took Arthas’s soul. He had to give up his soul to wield Frostmourne’s unholy power. Arthas believed that wielding the sword would help him protect his people, but in reality, the sword drove him mad. By the time Arthas returned to Lordaeron he was different. The young prince was now a Death Knight and he served the Lich King.
Is Arthas redeemable in World of Warcraft Shadowlands? A case could be made that Arthas was being controlled by Frostmourne. A person’s will is not entirely their own once in service to the Lich King. But, being controlled doesn’t mean that the person can’t fight against it or feel regret.
Arthas returned to Lordaeron to cheers and applause. None of which fazed him. He walked up to his father, King Terenas, and stabbed him with Frostmourne. Lordaeron fell that day as the Scourge was allowed to infiltrate the kingdom. Most of Lordaeron’s citizens were lost to the Scourge, but a few groups managed to escape.
Never did Arthas show remorse for killing his father. In fact, he found the urn his father’s ashes were in and dumped them out. Uther was protecting the enchanted urn. Arthas murdered Uther, dumped his father’s ashes, and placed Kel’Thuzad’s ashes inside. Kel’Thuzad was a strong human mage that Arthas brought back as a lich. A lich is a powerful undead sorcerer.
Arthas marched his undead army into the High-Elven kingdom of Quel’Thalas. Ranger General Sylvanas Windrunner tried to stop him. He killed Sylvanas and raised her up as a banshee, and then forced her to kill her own people. The prince defiled the Sunwell to resurrect Kel’Thuzad. The lich then opened a portal for the dreadlord Archimonde to invade Azeroth.
The Lich King called to Arthas. This caused Arthas to halt his efforts of regaining control of Lordaeron. Is Arthas redeemable in World of Warcraft Shadowlands? After fighting with Illidan Stormrage in Northrend, Arthas ascended to the Frozen Throne. He placed the Helm of Domination on his head and merged with the Lich King.
Over time, Arthas gained complete control of the Lich King’s power. He disposed of Ner’zhul, and also removed his own heart from his body. Removing his heart was the last piece of Arthas’s humanity that was holding him back. Arthas might not have been working for the Jailer, but he wasn’t on the side of good either.
The fallen prince doesn’t deserve to be redeemed. He allowed his arrogance and pride to drive his decisions. Arthas was well-meaning in trying to protect his people, but he allowed his lust for power and impulsiveness to drive his choices. The series of bad choices Arthas made are his own. Frostmorune and the Helm of Domination hold great power, but Arthas still retained a sliver of free will.
King Anduin of Stormwind is currently under the Jailer’s control in Shadowlands. Many fans are drawing parallels between Anduin and Arthas. They argue that their situations are the same so both characters should be redeemed. Flaws run rampant with this reasoning. Anduin has shown great faith and strength within the light. He’s never been tempted by power like Arthas was.
Also, the BlizzConline trailer clearly showed Anduin fighting the Jailer’s control after he attacked the Archon. There are runes on Anduin’s armor, and on his Mourneblade which are being used to control the king.
Arthas willingly gave his soul to Frostmourne. He also decided to kill the innocent citizens of Stratholme without trying to find another way. So this makes Arthas just as bad as the Scourge and the Burning Legion. Doing something bad for a good reason still has consequences. Usually, Anduin is cautious about hurting others without just cause. So it’s difficult to imagine Anduin and Arthas would make the same choices in similar situations.
Not once did Arthas stop and consider how his actions affected others. When his mentor, Uther, asked Arthas to stand down at Stratholme, he punished the man by suspending his Paladins from service. A good-hearted person would’ve respected his teacher even if they didn’t agree. So far we’ve never seen Anduin disrespect people in positions of power. Arthas shouldn’t be redeemed because he willingly gave his life to the darkness.
